Leverstock Green battled their way to an excellent point at second-placed Aylesbury United after their prolonged winter break finally came to an end.

Following a difficult close to 2012, Steve Benitez’s Levy side looked rejuvenated on Saturday and will be hoping to produce more of the same in the second half of the season.

Former Green striker Louis Austin had the chance of the game for the hosts in the fifth minute as he saw his shot blocked by Chris Cutler, before Tom Bambury fired over Levy’s first effort at the other end after 13 minutes.

With 20 minutes gone, a square ball from Austin set up a chance for Zac Reynolds, but Green keeper Tom Coulton produced the first of a number of fine saves as he deflected the shot wide with his legs.

Aylesbury started to put serious pressure on the Green goal and a pass from Levy old boy Steve Hatch put Reynolds in again, but Coulton stood his ground and parried away the shot.

A minute later, Coulton did well to tip over a rasping shot from Austin and other chances came and went for the hosts but Green dug deep to reach half-time level.

The hosts continued to pile on the pressure at the start of the second half and Coulton saved again with his legs to deny Field from point-blank range in the 48th minute.

On 57 minutes, the Levy keeper was relieved to see a cross from Reynolds come back off the bar and rebound to safety.

At the other end, Green began to create chances in the latter stages of the game and James Dabbs shot over from an Adiel Mannion pass, before Tobi Akin fired just wide

Both teams had chances to win the game late on, but neither goal was breached and Levy came away with the hard-earned point.

The draw sees Leverstock start the year in 15th position in the MSSML Premier Division league table, level on points with 14th-placed Stotfold.
