Tring Athletic returned to action at the Grass Roots Stadium with a deserved victory over nine-man London Colney.

After three Saturdays in a row away from home, Tring gave the Cow Lane faithful something to cheer about as a Reon Thomas strike and an own goal handed them the three points.

Tring dominated proceedings and came close to opening the scoring in the second minute when Matt Jarvis’ effort was saved by Colney keeper Mark Whittamore.

Thomas then saw a header fly wide, before Colney’s Kenny Hull was booked for a reckless challenge.

The away side started the second half brightly and could have gone in front, but Tring keeper Mike Underwood made a good stop from James Moseley.

The turning point in the match arrived shortly afterwards when Hull was shown his second yellow card for another late challenge, and Tring made the numerical advantage pay in the 67th minute when sub Ray Brown’s rebounded shot fell to Thomas to fire home.

The result was confirmed five minutes before time when Colney defender Matt Sutton turned in Tony Fields’ cross, and the visitors were reduced to nine men late on as Matt Newman was giving his marching orders for dissent.

The two sides will meet again on Saturday when Tring head to London Colney for a Premier Division Cup Clash.
