Comets are brought down to earth in the cup

Joel Williams was on target for Comets, but it was not enough to prevent the second round defeat.

There was better news in the Herts FA Sunday Senior Cup, however, as in-form Flaunden romped to an 8-1 victory over Hertford Saints in the third round of the competition.

Matt Bateman bagged a hat-trick, with Lee Butler (2), Matt Dean (2) and Joe Welton completing the rout.

In the Herts FA Intermediate Cup third round, FC Intervino had Kane Axten to thank for a 1-0 triumph over AFC Oddfellows, while FC Jubilee won 4-1 at The Boot Baldock Reserves with goals from Luke Hughes (2), Karl Davidson and Scott Carrington.

It was a disappointing day for the BSFL’s other representatives in the competition, however, as Sporting Oddfellows, Berko Athletic Reserves, Hemel Athletic Jam United and Robin Hood were all knocked out of the competition.

Oddfellows went down 3-2 against Facelad, Berko Athletic were hit for six by Apollo, Hemel Athletic were thumped 5-0 by Shamrock Rovers, Jam United were beaten 3-1 by Queens Head Sandridge, and Robin Hood were sunk 3-2 at home to Old Pond Athletic.

Landrovers booked their place in the BSFL Steve Norwood Challenge Cup third round as they thrashed Hemel Harriers 8-1 courtesy of strikes from Pat Rushton (2), Rob Chambers (2), Dave Wates (2), Simon Sparks and Jack Dobby.

AFC Doves were also on hot form in front of goal, thumping Everett Rovers 7-1 in the BSFL Sunday Senior Cup second round thanks to efforts from Marley Cash (3), Stefan Owen-Edwards (2), Ryan Charles and Adiel Mannion.

Back in league action, BSFL Division One side Potten End Sunday added three valuable points to their tally with a solid 2-0 win over Drays as Thomas Whiddett and Ned Ozkasim found the net.

Gossoms End and Echoes shared a 2-2 draw.

In BSFL Division Two, goals from Simon Blundell (2), Jamie Evans and Andrew Lloyd saw The Queens Head to a 4-2 victory at Comets Sports Club Reserves.

There were plenty of goals in BSFL Division three; seven of them coming in AFC Saints’ 5-2 triumph at GB Precision. John Walker helped himself to a hat-trick and Pete Austin bagged a brace.

Ollys Athletic had Marcus Tower (2) and Louie Miller to thank for a 3-1 win at Greenacres II Reserves, while Boxmoor thumped Victoria United 4-1 through strikes from Paul Bryson, Cristian Hough, Jamie Lewis and debutant Rhys Cassidy.

Surprisingly, only three of this Sunday’s games fell foul of the weather, despite the torrential rain which fell on Saturday.
