Berko edged past bottom side Holmer Green on Saturday to record their third win on the spin and climb to seventh in the MSSML Premier Division.

Holmer took the lead in the first half, but Berko responded to some stern half-time words from manager Mick Vipond to turn the game on its head with two goals in two minutes after the break.

“I’d like to say we played really well for 90 minutes but that wasn’t the case,” said Vipond. “It was the typical case of trying to tell a group of young players about the pitfalls of playing a team who are bottom of the table and not getting the message across.

“We had some strong words at half-time and made subs and managed to score two goals in two minutes to win the game.”

The visitors took a shock lead with a rare first half attack when Tom Alabaster opened the scoring from a corner at the Canal End.

Soon afterwards, Joe Da Silva hit the post for Green and the ball ran along the line and out to safety.

Clearly inspired by Vipond’s half-time roasting, Berko came out strongly in the second half and were back on level terms on the hour mark when substitute Ashely Morrissey crossed for Dale Sears to head in.

And the turnaround was complete a minute later as Alabaster brought down Myles Stephenson just outside the penalty area, allowing Josh Chamberlain to fire home at the second attempt.
