Dragon boat world record for Hemel man

DRAGON BOAT: Robin Oakley, of the Hemel Hempstead Canoe Club, has helped the GB Senior Mixed Dragon Boat Team to break a world record.

The team paddled 175.6 kilometres in 24 hours for charity, breaking the existing record by 7.1 kilometres.

Oakley, 49, said: “It was a gruelling task, and keeping on the pace was tough, especially going into the early hours, but my team mates and the charity goal kept me going.”

High winds meant the challenge set off three hours late, but the team battled through the conditions to get home safely.
