BERKHAMSTED School pupil Coco Day has made a sensational start to her athletics career.

In her first season in the U15 girls’ age group, the youngster came away with the silver medal from the South of England Indoor Pentathlon Championships at Lee Valley.

Six months ago, Coco joined Dacorum and Tring Athletics club, having won the U13 long jump title at the Herts Schools Championships.

She started out at the club as a specialist long jumper, but after a few sessions she decided that the pentathlon was the event for her.

The pentathlon is a tough event encompassing five events that the competitors have to get through in a single day. A total of all the points from the five events decides the outcome.

Coco’s first event at Lee Valley was the 60 metres hurdles which she completed in 10.15 seconds to place her in seventh position from the 22 competitors.

The second event was the high jump, where she cleared 1.43m for joint fifth position.

This was followed by the shot put – arguably Coco’s best event – where she finished in second place with a throw of 8.99m.

Next up was the long jump and a terrific leap of 4.74 metres gave Coco third place.

Finally came the event that most pentathletes dread, the gruelling 800 metres, but Coco remained unfazed and a superb sprint finish saw her close down the leaders on the line to finish in a time of 2:52.02.

That meant Coco had recorded personal best performances in all five events and finished with a points total of 2625 – enoughto hand her second place and the silver medal.

Her total is also a new U15 girls’ Dacorum and Tring club record, beating the previous best set in 2004.

Coco’s next event is the England Indoor Multi event Championships in Sheffield on March 3 and 4.
