Cream of the crop are honoured

The cream of the borough's sporting crop got their just desserts at this year's Dacorum Sports Awards.

More than 150 people watched as players, volunteers and promoters of sports including bowls, diving, football, cricket and judo were rewarded for their hard work this year.

The event, at Sportspace, Berkhamsted on Friday evening was compered by sports journalist Mick Dennis with awards handed out by MP Mike Penning and Mayor of Dacorum Roger Taylor.

Mr Taylor said: "This is one of those events that champion people in the borough, and that's my raison d'tre."

Laurie Rush's 'Rush Judo' was set up thanks to money left to him, brother Matthew and sister Joanna by dad Gordon.

Up for two awards, the group won the contribution to disability sport award for the MENCAP classes they run. Laurie said: "I'm absolutely over the moon and they (the MENCAP members) are as well. This was the award I really wanted to win."

Lizzie Roberts picked up the Audrey Dell Award for Gaddesden Place Riding for the Disabled.

She said: "It's wonderful, absolutely wonderful. I had no idea we would win it. I can't wait to show this to all the riders."
