Canoiests make history

Three pairs from Hemel Hempstead Canoe Club made history by racing in 'the Everest of paddling' on the weekend.

Shirine Voller and Al Farrance, Robin Oakleyand Chris Collison and Chris Preston and Tom Fryer beat 22 hours 30 minutes over the 125-mile Devizes Westminster Canoe Race in their lightweight C2 kayaks.

It is a time only 14 boats have beaten during the race's 60 year history.

The Hemel crews' training began back in 2008, and they have endured snow and ice, blisters, cuts, bruises, aches and pains en route to the standard needed to take on the mammoth course, following in the tracks of explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Rebecca Stephens, the first woman to climb Everest solo.
