A FIRST for Berkamsted saw the bowls club host a star county side to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
The county side won the game by nine shots last Wednesday, though Rita Wellham, Alan Parsons, John Webb and Terry Kenyon made up Berko's top rink.
In the Watford and District (W&D) Singles Berko's Paul Mackness beat Dave Collins of Kitcheners in the quarters finals 21-9 while the team of Carole Dunn, Ann Furlong, Jackie Cormack, Mary Cave, Janet Jackson and Mary Clarke beat a team from Cassiobury 42-25 in the Jubilee Triples.
Carole Dunn and Mary Clarke beat Sue Marshall and Barbara Driver in the W&D Ladies Pairs.
The club edged a friendly with Cheddington by six shots, top rink John Shotton, Sheila Fountain, Janet Jackson and Kevin Clarke last Tuesday while Sunday saw colours galore adorn the greens for Captain's Day.
The women won the battle of the sexes, for only the second time, by 34 shots.
Top rinks were David Biggerstaff, Paul Greenfield, Eric Browitt and Frank Cutting for the men and Evelyn Dobson, Doreen Webb, Janice Murgatroyd and Jackie Cormack for the women.
Funds to the tune of 740.11 were raised for the Hospice of St Francis with 108.50 going towards Multiple Sclerosis research.
The men from Potten End are through to the final of the Ray Cup having beaten a team from Tring by 25 shots.
The trio of Carol Durrant, Jan Dean and Glad Pearce are through to the fourth round of the W&D Triples afer beating a team from Bushey.
The men won their mid-week match with North Mymms 90-67, top rink Arthur Page, Brian Howlett, Bob Anderson and Stan Durrant, while PE lost to Luton Town on Saturday.
The club last visited Potten End 20 years ago, and won despite the efforts of Dave Gomm, Alan Howling, Brian Cowland and Dave Burfot.
Sunday's mixed match at Rowley Lane was a win for Potten End 136-96, top rink Eileen Pacetti, Arthur Page, Dave Gomm and Barbara Driver.
Tring were close to getting their own back on Potten End in the County League but lost 40-39.
They did however beat Chessvale 136-63, top rink Shirley Critoph, Dave Cartland and Dave Dickinson, and Garston in the W&D League 32-24.
Dave Wass was eliminated in the County Officers Singles but Ken Woodward reached the final of the unbadged event.
Last Thursday saw Kings Langley host more than 100 bowlers for the W&D Veterans' Gala.
North Watford won all their matches to take the title.
Saturday saw KL lose in the league at home to Bushey 65-55, though they won both friendly rinks - Lucinda Blake, Carol Bates, Maria Barry and Viv Tolley victorious by 33-10.
A good-humoured local derby with Abbots Langley went the way of Kings 58-45.
Trevor Baker, Dick Tolley, John Bates and Roy Wildman won 23-12 and Eric Hatch, Ron Swithenbank, Richard Rigarlsford and Tony Newbould were 21-11 victors.
Kitcheners lost both their mid-week matches.
They were beaten by Wendover in a four-rink match 85-67, their highest rink Steve Delderfield, Jan Scattergood, Gloria Warner and Dave Shirley.
Then on Sunday they went down at the Owls 76-69.
Newcomer Joy Starling helped Brian Rumph's quarter win the highest rink with the assistance of Tony Scattergood and Ken Rowe.
