Hemel Storm came close to pulling off an upset against the undefeated Bristol Flyers at Sportspace on Saturday but were eventually beaten by just six points.

Only a handful of points separated the teams throughout a high quality contest, but in the end Bristol’s better shooting success rate was the difference.

Storm trailed 22-18 at the first quarter break as Bristol’s Mostapha Alfaki hit consecutive three-pointers.

In the second quarter, Storm top-scorer Drew Spinks and guard Bode Adeluola combined to finish some excellent Hemel team-work to keep their side in contention and go into the locker room at half-time just five points adrift at 46-41.

Neither team could make a decisive break in the second half and Bristol edged the third period by one point, while the fourth was drawn 25-all.

Mark Lloyd, who recently took over from Storm’s director of coaching Dave Titmuss as the club’s senior team head coach, said: “We have to put things in perspective,

“Bristol is a long-established Division One club with the resources to bring in non-British players.

“In only our first season in the top flight, we are proving that we can compete.

“They shot at a 55 per cent success rate and we were 45 per cent – that’s the difference.”

Storm have a busy weekend ahead with two games at Sportspace, against Brixton on Saturday and Bristol on Sunday.
