Wanted: a Berkhamsted boss 'for the game, not the gain'

Berkhamsted Town FC is still searching for a new chairman, almost three months after Guillermo Ganet quit.
The Spanish boss, who acted as joint chair and treasurer, resigned at the end of August after a vote of no confidence against him.

And this week, the Lilywhites board revealed it is still searching for a successor.

Club secretary Keith Hicks said: "I think the problem is there's no money to be made.

"We just hope that somebody in the area will come forward for the love of the game, rather than the gain."

He added: "We're looking for someone who's got a good background knowledge of local football, and also some business contacts that could bring some sponsorship to the club."

Mr Hicks said Berkhamsted was finding it hard to make money from ticket sales because the side's current league covers such a large area, making it difficult to pull large crowds from teams based miles away.

The board member added that the Lilywhites were also looking for a new treasurer, reserve team secretary and general committee members.

Despite the disruption off the pitch at Broadwater however, Mr Hicks said manager Tony Duncombe and his side were not being distracted.

He said: "I don't think it's affecting the players - I think they're doing us proud at the moment."

Duncombe's side are still looking for their first win of the season in the Southern League Division One Midlands, having lost 1-0 on Saturday (November 17), despite a good performance at home against top-end Romulus.

The visitors took the lead after 15 minutes when Leon Mitchell latched on to a long clearance from keeper Matt Harris.

With Andy Mullins moved back into midfield however, the Lilywhites looked stronger in attack, and Harris pulled off a few fine saves to stop the home side from getting an equaliser.

Mullins beat three defenders to shoot from the byline, only to see his effort tipped over before it could dip under the bar.

Tony Fields also had a downward header stopped by the goalie.

Berkhamsted won a free-kick in a dangerous position late in the game but the set-piece chance was smashed over by Scott Priestnall.

On Saturday, the Lilywhites make the long trip down to Gloucestershire to take on Cinderford Town - a side that lost 8-1 on Saturday.

The club's reserve team are at home to Borehamwood on Saturday, kick-off at 3pm.

Anyone interested in applying for the positions of chairman, treasurer, reserve team secretary or committee member at Berkhamsted Town FC can call Keith Hicks on 07767 430087.
