Saracens' pre-season work has involved several days with the Royal Marines, a week long training camp in Portugal and pre-season matches in France and Wales.

All the squad's hard work has all been in preparation for the new season of the Guinness Premiership, which begins this Saturday against Harlequins at Twickenham.

"All of this (training] has been designed to improve the physical, mental and leadership skills of the players," Director of Rugby Eddie Jones said.

Saracens traditionally have a strong pre-season and will be looking to improve on their eighth position-finish last season, with Jones stating that the aim for this season is to keep on improving.

Saracens have recruited heavily over the summer with the signings of England captain Steve Borthwick, former Welsh captain Michael Owen, and the skipper of South African side Blue Bulls - Wikus Van Heerden.

With many experienced faces appearing in the pack to replace the loss of Saracens legends Richard Hill and Paul Gustard, the backs have received an injection of young, fresh legs.

Two new centres have appeared at the club in the form of South African Brad Barritt and Australian Ben Jacobs, whilst 24-year-old USA wing Chris Wyles has been added on secondment.

Jones has also bolstered his backs with the inclusion of academy players - winger Noah Cato and fly half Alex Goode have been added to the professional squad for the forthcoming season.

With plenty of experience in the squad Steve Borthwick and Andy Farrell have been named co-captains for the forthcoming season.

There are leaders all over the pitch with many players in the squad having previously captained their clubs or countries.

Jones believes that this wealth of experience and leadership will be an important factor in Saracens drive for improvement in the forthcoming season.

The level of expectation and excitement is high within the squad, new signing Owen stating: "There is a lot of anticipation among the squad and while we know there is still work to do, everyone is starting to look forward to that game against Harlequins on the opening day of the season."

With a strong, experienced squad and the fresh ideas of a new and highly experienced head coach, Saracens stand a good chance of improving on their mid table position.

As Captain Steve Borthwick said about the season to come: "I think we'll do very well".
