Chris Preston led the way as three paddlers from Hemel Hempstead Canoe Club completed the Waterside C kayak marathon on Sunday.

The race that covers 23 miles and 35 portages from Pewsey to Newbury contained a long, dark tunnel that caused many a problem to the competitors.

The more kayaks that went in and out of the tunnel, the more choppy its waters became and that certainly seemed to affect the Hemel contingent.

Elite Hemel canoeist Chris Preston, a local fitness instructor, completed the course in 3hrs 32mins in his K1 , putting him in the lead in the services division.

John Houston and Robin Oakley again suffered steering problems and snaked the course in their double in 4hrs 15mins.

Excellent support was provided by Al (UnC) Farrance and Bob Pearce.
