Fencers from Dacorum put their opponents to sword in the Herts Novice Foil competition on Saturday, but fell just short of the making the top grade.

Jack Parsons and Connor Sutton, both 15 and of Dacorum Fencing, both fought hard in the opening rounds of the competition, with Jack going unbeaten through the early stages and Connor only losing one fight at the competition at Hertfordshire Sports Village, Hatfield.

For the elimination stages the pair were seeded first and third respectively, meaning they both received byes to the quarter finals.

Both won their quarter final fights, with Jack putting in a faultless performance winning 15-0. However the semi-finals proved more difficult for the pair.

Connor went down fighting as he crashed out to Watford fencer Pervez Choudhury in an exciting bout, eventually losing 15-12, but claiming the bronze for himself.

Jack out-fought University of Hertfordshire fencer Allan Smith, winning 15-8 to set up a showdown with Connor's conqueror Pervez in the final.

In a closely-fought encounter it was the Watford wonder who eventually emerged victorious, as he scraped a 15-13 over his determined opponent.

Chairman of Dacorum Fencing Chris King said: "They were quite disappointed as they were both looking to win.

"But having said that they did really well against adult competition and they can only go from strength to strength."

Jack's silver and Connor's bronze medals will go alongside the silver and bronze they won earlier in the year at the Herts Youth Foil competition.
