The incident happened between 1pm and 2pm on Sunday, April 17 on London Road, Hemel Hempstead.

An off-duty police officer tried to stop the driver of the van after witnessing a domestic dispute between a man and a woman.

During the pursuit the van driver, who was heading towards Kings Langley, rammed into the front of the off-duty officer’s silver Vauxhall Tigra before also reversing into the vehicle.

PC Sarah-Ann Feeney, investigating, said: “This incident happened on a Sunday afternoon along a busy road and I’m sure there are people who witnessed the collision who may have not yet contacted police.

“I am appealing for anyone who saw what happened or anyone with information that could help the investigation to get in touch by calling me via the non-emergency number 101 and quote crime reference number D1/16/2754.”

> Anthony McLaughlin, aged 26, of Baldwins Lane, Watford, has been charged with assault, dangerous driving and criminal damage.

He has been remanded and is due to appear at court on May 16.
