The Labour MEP who represents this area has defended Ed Miliband’s decision to shoot a party political broadcast at Watford General Hospital – despite criticism from Hemel Hempstead’s MP.
East of England Labour Member of the European Parliament Richard Howitt, however, said: “The Tory MP is making excuses – I am getting on and delivering.”
Mr Howitt said he works with the Prince’s Trust and has helped 500 young people get jobs in the health service through the Getting Into Health scheme.
He said: “We have shown that we have listened and changed and we are setting out our plans for the future, not the past.”
He described Mr Miliband’s party political broadcast as ‘really good’.
He said: “He was really sensitive and showed Labour is really strongly against the privatisation of the NHS.”
He accused Mike Penning of ‘trying to cover over the chronic failure of his own government on the National Health Service’.
This website tweeted Mr Miliband to say: “If you love the NHS, as PM will you reopen the Hemel A&E that your government closed in 2009?”
The Labour leader did not respond.
Mr Howitt will be in Hemel Hempstead tomorrow to talk to members of the public in the run up to next Thursday’s European elections.
He will have a stall outside of Marlowes Shopping Centre from 11.15am.
