The residents of four houses in Lombardy Drive, Berkhamsted, have been unable to come and go from their properties since the mature beech tree came down at around midday.

Neighbour John Goffey, who captured the scene, said he and his wife heard a “rumbling” noise before noticing the tree lying across the road.

He said: “It’s never been vertical. It’s always been leaning to one side.”

It is not known at this stage what caused the tree to fall over and Mr Goffey said it had “not been especially windy” in Berkhamsted today.

Tree surgeons are currently on scene working to cut the tree into smaller pieces and remove it from the road.
