A new Tesco store is coming to Hemel Hempstead, although store bosses admit that even they are in the dark about what it will look like.

The supermarket has written to local residents in Fletcher Way to say it will be opening a new outlet on the former site of the Royal Stag pub.

However, two separate spokesmen for the firm were unable to confirm when the store would open, how large it would be and what type of Tesco it will be.

It is understood that some remedial work has already begun on site, but no formal planning application has been submitted.

Tesco was also unable to confirm when or if a proposal would be submitted to Dacorum Borough Council.

Currently there are five Tesco stores in the town, including the Tesco Extra hypermarket on Jarman Way and four smaller Express stores.
