A student from Hemel is raising money so she can go and help children in Uganda.

Sophie Chapman plans to take part in East African Playgrounds, a project to help build a chidren’s playground.

Sophie, who is studying tourism management at the University of Hertfordshire, needs to raise £800 for the charity and about £1,000 for her flights and insurance.

Former Longdean pupil Sophie, aged 18, is due to fly out to Uganda for a month in June.

She said: “I am extremely interested in this project because one of my A-levels was Children’s Play, Learning and Development, and I learned how important play is for children’s development, especially physically and emotionally.

“I will be helping to build a playground for one of Uganda school’s to help the children have the opportunity to play and socialise outside of the classroom.”

Sophie added: “I have never taken part in a project like this before so it is definitely a leap out of my comfort zone but as soon as I saw the poster at my university I wanted to take part in the project.”
