Singers tuning up for the Icicle works
If a concert of Christmas music that restricts itself to old favourites like We Three Kings and Away In A Manger is a bit safe for your tastes, then check out what’s on the programme when the Hemel Hempstead Singers give voice to their seasonal show.
Admittedly the programm e for When Icicles Hang at St Mary’s Church, Hemel Hempstead on Saturday, December 8, will finish off with a rousing rendition of Good King Wenceslas, along the way there will be more refined treats, starting with Hassler’s Canite Tuba swiftly followed by selections from Monteverdi, Sweelink and Praetorius.
Thomas Tallis, and William Byrd also contribute to the varied selection of music celebrating the arrival of the festive season.
The varied music features the winter song cycle When Icicles Hang, written in 1973 by the British choral composer John Rutter, as well as sixteenth century compositions by Byrd and Tallis, and a number of well-loved traditional carols.
The singers pride themselves on their wide-ranging repertoire of music from the 16th century to the present day, and under musical director Simon Pusey are hard at work rehearsing for the show.
There’s a warm welcome promised to any new members who want to get involved, and tenors and basses are particularly prized.
The singers will be accompanied by Chris Mear at the organ and piano.
