See town’s 700-year-old market charter

Tring’s original market charter signed by King Edward II in 1315 will be on display at the town’s local history museum from tomorrow (November 27).

Granted to the Lord of the Manor at that time, the Abbot of Faversham, the charter allowed him to hold a market in the town which has continues to this day.

The charter, written in Latin on parchment, is normally kept at the National Archives at Kew in London, but Tring

Local History Society has been loaned the document for display in the museum in Brook Street for a short period thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The charter will be displayed with a translation and other explanations of the historical context, and visitors

will be invited to mark a modern map of Tring to record their presence at this historic event.

Admission to this volunteer-run museum is free, and the charter will be on display on the following days:
