A message of reassurance has been sent out to scores of council house tenants after workmen with no identification came unannounced to replace their shed doors.
The tenants took to social networking site Facebook in their droves to ask for advice on what to do about the mystery visitors, who arrived in white Transit vans. Some users said they had called the police.
But Dacorum Borough Council spokesman Sara Hamilton confirmed that the workers were genuinely from a company working on its behalf to install longer-lasting shed doors.
She said: “The white vans are contractors from a company that are working on behalf of Dacorum Borough Council to upgrade shed doors.
“The group manager for Property and Place has called the company and reminded them that they should have had ID and that they should have written to residents in advance.
“She will be taking this up further with them.”
