Do you have two left thumbs when it comes to sticky tape? When you apply a sheet of wrapping paper to a loved one’s Christmas gift does it look as if has been mauled by one of Santa’s reindeer?
If your gift wrapping is just woeful, youngsters from Hemel Hempstead’s Cavendish School have the answer to your Yuletide prayers.
Sixth form students are offering a gift wrapping service to raise funds for the Volunteer Centre Dacorum at the Riverside Shopping Centre every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday until Christmas.
You’ll find them opposite the centre’s H&M fashion store, and prices start at a very reasonable £1. The talented team not only provide a selection of wrapping paper and festive ribbons for you to choose from, but also offer tea and cake while you wait.
As part of a Dragon’s Den-style initiative the youngsters have been set the challenge to turn £100 into £1,000 by February and so far the gift wrapping service has raised around £200.
Teams from other schools in the borough are tackling a similar challenge for other good causes – last night a team from Adeyfield School who are raising funds for Dacorum Mencap hosted a curry and comedy night.
Lorraine Rockminster from the Volunteer Centre is full of praise for the scheme.
She said ‘’It’s fantastic, everybody wins. The youngsters gain useful business skills and hopefully this project will hook these guys to keep the volunteering community going in the future’’
And if you’re concerned about entrusting your precious gifts to teenagers, think again.
Emily Richardson, 16, is one of the Christmas crew and she promises that she and her colleagues have had top class training and have already successfully wrapped all sorts of items, from slippers to scooters.
And you can see how good they are in our video report, when they tackle a challenge to wrap a gift against the clock and complete the task in less than 30 seconds.
Shopper Steve Doman has been twice already and plans to visit the team a third time.
He said ‘’The service is very good, I am just going to get two more presents so I will probably be back!’’
