After an initial welcome, the visitors headed for the workshop where volunteers were encouraged to change a car’s wheel under the supervision of service technicians Vicky Kempton and Nathan Kirk.

Women were also given practical advice on routine car maintenance and checking oil and fluid levels.

After refreshments, PC Tony Knibb, of Herts Constabulary, talked about planning and thinking ahead for long journeys, what to do during a breakdown, and mobile phone use.

Former policeman Daniel Rands, who specialises in insurance fraud investigation, talked about ‘Crash for Cash’ incidents and the benefits of dash cams.

Raffle prizes were supplied by local companies Black Goo, Diffusion Hair and Beauty Salon, Magnolia Florist and Beechwood Fine Foods.

Managing director Justine Chapman said: “This is our fifth event of its nature and follows a survey by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) that showed nearly half of women drivers didn’t get their cars serviced or wouldn’t handle a booking themselves as they were not comfortable dealing with mechanics and garages.

“We’re helping to address that issue and we’re also looking to hold an event for young drivers in the future”.
