Plans to build a recycling and energy recovery facility to help deal with Hertfordshire’s waste have been turned down by the Secretary of State.

The decision to approve the proposed facility – which was due to be built at New Barnfield in Hatfield – has been the subject of a public enquiry, with the inspector’s results put before the government in February.

It was announced yesterday the proposal has been turned down.

Herts County Council cabinet member for Highways Terry Douris, of Grovehill in Hemel Hempstead, said: “This is very disappointing news. We urgently need an efficient and cost-effective way of dealing with Herts’ residual waste that will help us divert the maximum amount possible away from landfill. Building this facility would save residents an estimated £667m over 25 years. Doing nothing simply isn’t an option.”

Mr Douris said the council will consider its next steps with contractor Veolia and remain sensitive to local concerns.
