A group of slimmers have raised hundreds for charity by holding their own 5km Race for Life challenge.

Hemel Hempstead’s Highfield Slimming World club donated £670 to Cancer Research UK from the event in Grovehill playing fields.

The 25 women and men, who have lost more than 50 stone between them, also welcomed 25 people from outside of the group to take part, with scout groups volunteering to help on the day.

The Highfield group’s race was part of a wider national event running across all Slimming World groups this summer.

Haylea Gavin, who runs the clubs every Wednesday at St Pauls Church, said: “It was a fantastic event with a real feel-good atmosphere.

“We saw young, old, male and female participants enter the event, with a range of different abilities and fitness levels. I’m so pleased with how much we raised for Cancer Research UK and I think the event showed just how motivating being part of a group like ours can be.”
