‘Was that alright, Mrs Wright?’ Pupils show support for sick teacher in fun run

A school’s annual charity fun run was even more poignant this year as pupils supported a popular teacher suffering from cancer.

The Hemel Hempstead School decided that this year’s fundraiser would be in aid of Rennie Grove Hospice Care as Fiona Wright, former head of history, is being helped by the charity after becoming struck down with the illness in December 2013.

Mrs Wright said: “The school called me and asked if I would like to choose a charity for this year’s fun run to support. As Rennie Grove Hospice Care is currently helping me I thought it would be nice to support them.”

This morning, Mrs Wright sounded the starting pistol to set off the sea of students, who all dressed in purple.

She added: “Some pupils ran and wanted to win, others enjoyed the dressing up and walked. It was a really lovely day that ended back at the school with an afternoon of fun events and a barbecue.”

Money was raised through sponsorship and pupils will be entered in to a prize draw if they manage to raise more than £50. The school is hoping to raise more than £7,000 this year.

Today also saw pupils from Longdean School have fun in fancy dress for a charity walk in aid of four good causes from around Dacorum.

The students completed the event in aid of Team Macy, WheelPower, Paradise Furniture and Macmillan Cancer Support, starting from Boxmoor.
