Animal rights campaigners have slammed a village pub restaurant for its refusal to stop selling the controversial foie gras delicacy.

The Bricklayers Arms in Flaunden currently serves the dish – criticised for causing unnecessary suffering to ducks and geese during its production – as a starter.

Hertfordshire Animal Rights has now launched a campaign to have it taken off the menu at the pub restaurant.

Spokesman Tod Bradbury said: “We politely emailed Bricklayers Arms numerous times regarding their sale of foie gras to which they did not respond.

“They repeatedly refused a dialogue with us over the telephone and abruptly hung up on concerned individuals who contacted them about the matter.

“We asked them to reconsider the sale of foie gras and introduce a ‘Foie Gras Free Policy’.

“As a result of this, we launched an online campaign against the restaurant where in which we urged people to politely contact Bricklayers Arms via social media.

“They responded by deleting comments and, again, did not engage with us on the issue.”

Foie gras is produced by forcing metre long, metal pipes down the throats of ducks and geese.

They are then pumped full of food five times a day until their livers become infected and swell up to ten times their normal size.

Mr Bradbury said: “The production of foie gras is so horrific that it is illegal in the UK.

“It is an absolute scandal that restaurants such as Bricklayers Arms are allowed to purvey a product they could not legally produce in this country.

“We are calling on everyone to boycott Bricklayers Arms and all other establishments that sell foie gras until they agree to halt the sale of such cruelty.”

Hertfordshire Animal Rights says it will continue its lawful and peaceful campaign against Bricklayers Arms and all other purveyors of foie gras until the county is foie gras free.

Previously, Apsley’s Shendish Manor banned the dish after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) activist Katherine Rudd got in touch with the hotel’s boss.

Oakman Inns and Restaurants, which runs The Akeman in Tring, Water End’s Red Lion and six other establishments, has confirmed that it will never serve foie gras.
