Every county councillor was asked to nominate up to ten of the worst gullies at the start of the year and engineers will now visit each of the nominated gullies for an inspection.

Initially a three-month project dealing with up to 770 gullies, the work carried out will then be evaluated and further specialised resources may be allocated if needed.

Terry Douris, cabinet member for highways at County Hall, said: “We have turned local knowledge into a positive project to tackle problematic drains.

“This targeted approach is cost effective and will allocate resources to those sites known to cause the greatest inconvenience, such as those used regularly by pedestrians and large numbers of vehicles.”

The county’s 168,000 gullies are maintained on the council’s behalf by private firm Ringway.
