Tring-raised Andrea Leadsom given role in Theresa May's new cabinet

Failed Tory leadership campaigner has been handed a role in new Prime Minister Theresa May's cabinet.

Mrs Leadsom, who grew up in Tring and has referenced her childhood numerous times, is the new Secretary of State for the Environment.

Although she was initially expected to support Boris Johnson’s campaign she instead chose to make her own bid for the role. Mr Johnson subsequently dropped out of the race, and Mrs Leadsom saw off fellow MPs Michael Gove, Stephen Crabb and Liam Fox.

However she then quit the race before it could go to a poll of party members, having gained the support of 84 MPs compared to 199 who backed Mrs May.
