The winners of the Berkhamsted Writing Competition have been chosen.

Hundreds of schools and grown-ups entered the 500-word short story contest, which had the theme of ‘beginnings’.

The primary school age category was won by Isabella Garlick from St Thomas More School in Berkhamsted.

The top three in the secondary category were from John F Kennedy School in Hemel Hempstead – and the winner was Eve Attwood from Year 7. She had written a story about a boy coming to terms with his father’s impending death.

The adult winner was Vanessa Horn.

Berkhamsted estate agent Aitchison’s will match the £757 raised by £1 entry fees to the competition, and it will all go to Northchurch-based The Hospice of St Francis.

The judges were authors Catherine Alliot and Jonathan Stroud, and Berkhamsted-based children’s publishers Make Believe Ideas.
