Shopkeeper fined after illegal tobacco found by sniffer dogs

A Tring shopkeeper who sold illegal tobacco products has been fined, after a sting operation where his stash was discovered hidden in Happy Hippo sweet boxes and in crates of lager.

Haydar Guzel, 31, of Hudson Way, Edmonton, pleaded guilty to eight charges relating to having tobacco products in his possession for supply which did not have the required written warning in English or any pictorial warning as prescribed.

He was fined £1,600 plus full costs, totalling £2,980.62 including a victim surcharge, at St Albans Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday (April 13).

Guzel was warned in April 2015 for similar non-compliance and received a letter of warning from Herts County Council.

The court heard that officers visited his premises at New Mill Food and Wine, New Mill Terrace, Tring, on August 26 with detector dogs. A quantity of tobacco products were found within the premises, some of which were hidden in Happy Hippo sweet boxes and in crates of lager in the stock room.
