Prize-winning poem set to inspire readers

A Berkhamsted businesswoman and poet has won an inaugural poetry prize.

Joanna Miller, founder of online store Bespoke Verse, is celebrating after winning Bloomsbury Children’s Books’ Poetry Prize, beating hundreds of other poetry writers.

The contest was launched in July, after research by Bloomsbury found that just one child in six reads poetry outside the classroom.

The judges, including authors Sarah Crossman and Tony Bradman plus Bloomsbury commissioning editor Hannah Rolls and National Literacy Trust director Jonathan Douglas, praised Joanna’s poem for its originality, impactful structure and relevance to young people.

Joanna’s prize included an iPad and a selection of Bloomsbury titles.

Her inspirational poem will feature in a national poster campaign in schools, designed to encourage children to read more.

Jonathan Douglas said: “We were delighted to receive hundreds of brilliant entries for our first Poetry Prize, which celebrate poetry in all its wonderful forms.

“The originality of Joanna’s poem and its power to really resonate with young people saw it shine above the competition. As it is displayed in schools across the country, we hope the poem will help more children to discover the enjoyment that poetry and reading can bring.”

Joanna said: “I am so proud to have won such a prestigious accolade by Bloomsbury Children’s Books.

“I hope my poem will encourage a new generation of poets to put pen to paper.”
