Police officers are reassuring householders following rumours of distraction-type offences in Hemel Hempstead which involve a woman approaching homes and begging for money for baby milk.
Sgt Paul Hedges said: “We are aware that there have been a number of incidents which involve a woman calling at homes in the town asking for money for baby milk.
“Further information has been circulating claiming this is in an attempt to distract residents whilst someone else goes to the back of the property to see if they can steal anything.
“I would like to stress that whilst we are aware of a woman asking for money, we have had no incidents or crimes involving a distraction using this method. From the information we have it seems this woman may be committing a begging offence rather than a distraction burglary.
“I would also like to ask residents to ensure they report any incidents immediately to ensure officers can respond as soon as possible to speak with this woman.”
Anyone with information should contact Herts Police via the non-emergency number 101.
