Nothing to mow-n about as Herts hits grass-cutting peak

We have now reached half-time for the summer grass-cutting season, and Hertfordshire's mowers have covered the equivalent of more than 1,200 football pitches.

Despite the recent mix of sunshine and heavy showers meaning that grass and vegetation grow really quickly, the teams from council contractor Ridgeway have already carried out seven cuts, equal to approximately 10.5million square metres.

And by the end of the summer that figure is expected to reach 16.5 million.

Terry Douris, cabinet member for highways at Herts County Council, said: “Grass cutting and verge maintenance is one element of the wide-ranging highways works we undertake throughout the year to sustain and improve Hertfordshire’s roads. Teams will be out around the county over the coming months during the growing season.

“I’m pleased that where possible we’re coordinating with our district and borough 
council partners to keep our public spaces well maintained and clear of litter.”
