A village church been shortlisted for a prestigious national award and is now in the running to receive a £2,000 prize.
Markyate Baptist Church will compete against three other organisations from across the country in the 2014 Biffa Awards, for a chance to be named winner of the ‘community buildings’ category.
The award recognises people who transform their local community through Biffa Award-funded projects.
The church has already received £50,000 in funding from the Biffa Award to enlarge the church hall, create more space and add a large kitchen with improved facilities.
Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning congratulated the church clergy and congregation on the achievement. He said: “I congratulate Markyate Baptist Church on being shortlisted for this award.
“It is important our community buildings are brought up to modern standards so that they can better serve local communities. I wish them the best of luck for the final in October.”
