A man has today been charged with false imprisonment, rape, indecent assault, robbery and possession of an offensive weapon in connection with two knifepoint sexual assaults 30 years ago.

The man – 51-year-old Paul Drinkwater who is of no fixed address – was arrested in Maidenhead yesterday. His arrest follows a review by officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit (BCHMCU).

The alleged offences occurred in the Berkhamsted area in 1984 and are as follows:

– At about 11.45pm on November 25th, it is alleged that a 15-year-old girl was seriously sexually assaulted at knifepoint in the Durrants Lane area

– At about 1am on December 16th, two 18-year-old girls were both allegedly attacked at knifepoint in the Bullbeggars Lane area.

Following authority from the Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service detectives from the BCHMCU have charged Paul Drinkwater with false imprisonment, indecent assault, rape, robbery and possession of an offensive weapon in relation to the November incident.

In relation to the December incident he has been charged with two counts of false imprisonment, indecent assault, rape, robbery and possession of an offensive weapon.

He will appear before Hatfield Remand Court tomorrow.

While these offences occurred 30 years ago, officers would like to appeal to anyone who may have any information about this series of assaults to contact them via the Herts Police non-emergency number 101 quoting Operation Willow.
