Himalayan delivery by bike for Amazon man

Liam Ackerman, aged 27, an operations manager at Amazon Logistics’ Hemel Hempstead delivery station, will travel to Delhi in July, then cycle 500km along the Manali-Leh Highway, the world’s second-highest long-distance road.

He will be completely self supporting during the 10-day trip, which crosses some of the world’s highest mountain passes, before reaching Shey Lamdon School in Leh.

Run by the charity Himalayan Children, Shey Lamdon School teaches 185 children, 153 of whom live in the schools hostel. Many would not otherwise get a formal education.

Not only is keen cyclist Liam planning to deliver the Kindle device personally, but he has also been working with his team at Amazon to raise funds for the school.

Liam said: “I became aware of the importance of providing opportunities for the young people in the region when I was trekking through the Himalayas eight years ago. I visited a local orphanage and left with a desire to return and do something to make a difference to these children’s lives.”

Charity spokesman Gail McAllister said: “Liam’s efforts are greatly appreciated by everyone at Himalayan Children and Shey Lamdon School. They’re excited to receive the Kindle and I know it’s something the children of Shey Lamdon will love using as part of their education.”
