Hemel MP given new government role

Mr Penning, who played a key role in Mrs May’s successful Conservative Party leadership campaign, is a former soldier himself.

He joined the Grenadier Guards as a ‘boy soldier’ at the age of 16, and served in the Guards in Kenya, Germany and Northern Ireland. He also served for a period in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

In September 2013 he was appointed Honorary Colonel of 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment, Army Cadet Force, a duty he carried out for two years.

Mr Penning said: “I am delighted to be offered this job at the Ministry of Defence. It is no secret that one of my main interests is supporting those that serve in our armed forces and the welfare of veterans.

“I am very much looking forward to getting started in this new role.”
