A former Tring School student is set to represent Great Britain in this year’s Sprint Duathlon European Championships.

Hannah McInroy-Naylor finished third in her qualifying race and will travel to Horst in Holland in April, where she will run 5km, cycle 20km and then run another 5km – all in the fastest time possible.

Hannah, who now lives in Suffolk, is looking forward to it as she’ll be joined by five other members of her former club, the University of East Anglia triathlon club.

She first fell in love with duathlons and triathlons back in 2011, when she was still at university, and now her hobby has got a little more serious.

The 23-year-old said: “I did a few races just for fun because I enjoyed it, but then I came first in my age group in my first season and I thought: Maybe I should take this more seriously.”

But for Hannah, Horst is just another drop in the ocean – she recently invested in a coach and begun structured training sessions for the first time, as her main goal is to become a professional middle distance triathlete.

She said: “I want to get some results behind me first, but I’m focusing on the future. All the races are good practice and it’s been an amazing experience.”

The trainee teacher first competed for Great Britain in last year’s AG World Triathlon Championships but disaster struck after her bike brakes locked on the cycle leg.

She said: “The mechanical problems were hard because it meant I could only go round the course slowly, but I still made it.”

Hannah is studying for a PGCE at the University of Cambridge and is currently teaching GCSE history at a school in Bury St Edmunds. She regularly pops back to Tring to visit her family, who still live in the town.

The young trainee teacher is also looking for sponsorship to help her on her journey towards the professional triathlon world. If you think you could help, email her at h.mcinroy.naylor@gmail.com.
