Green-fingered gardeners in Dacorum can pick up some compost for free thanks to the recycling efforts of their neighbours.

Dacorum Borough Council is giving away up to four bags of compost per vehicle for the third consecutive year, to mark the national initiative Compost Awareness Week.

You can collect the pre-bagged material – made from the contents of the borough’s green wheely bins – from Hemel Hempstead’s Cupid Green depot in Redbourn Road on Sunday, May 11 from 10am to 3pm.

Last year, people living in Dacorum composted around 15,600 tonnes of food waste, cardboard, and garden waste in their green wheeled bins, diverting it from landfill.

Cabinet member for environment and sustainability at the council Julie Laws said, “This is the third year that we’re giving away free compost made from your food, cardboard and garden waste. It’s fantastic that we’re able to offer the compost back to our residents as a way to say ‘thank you’ for your recycling efforts in using your green bins.”

Bags will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

The compost is being provided by Envar, the company responsible for composting the contents of the green wheeled bins.

For more information about the event call 01442 228000 and ask for Waste Services.
