A butcher who helped raise about £250,000 for charity The Pepper Foundation during his time working in Berkhamsted has retired.
Joe Collier, 66, took over Eastwoods in Gravel Path, Berkhamsted, in 1989, and launched the annual Pepper Golf Day, a fundraiser at Ashridge Golf Club, in 1997.
Eastwoods has won many awards under Mr Collier’s leadership, and even stocked organic meat from Highgrove Gardens, the Gloucestershire estate of Prince Charles.
Mr Collier was a butcher for 60 years and is a patron of The Pepper Foundation.
He decided to call it a day after collapsing at work in March and then going through numerous hospital tests.
He said: “I have had letters and cards and all sorts and it’s quite touching. It’s very moving to know that people care.”
