A taxi company is offering free rides for 24 hours - but only if England win the football World Cup this summer.
Choice Taxis, who have bases in Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted say people can have free journeys around either town if Roy Hodgson’s side win one of the most coveted trophies in world sport for the first time in 58 years.
The company’s office manager Derek Gowlett, who came up with the idea said: “We will be offering free rides for 24 hours after the World Cup final if England win in Brazil.
“It only applies if you are travelling within either Hemel or Berkhamsted.
“If you want to go anywhere further afield, you will have to pay.”
Although the majority of pundits think it is unlikely England will reach the World Cup final let alone win the tournament, Derek is optimistic on their chances.
He said: “I do honestly think we have a good chance of winning the World Cup.
“I don’t like all this negativity surrounding our chances, we do have a lot of good players.”
Derek said the reaction from other staff at the firm had been very positive to his idea.
He said: “I came up with the idea a couple of weeks ago and the owner and the drivers all really liked it.
“None of them thought it was a mad or a crazy suggestion.
“We have already started preparing for the eventuality - we have taken out some extra insurance because we have over 100 vehicles that we could operate on the day.
“We have made sure that we have as many drivers available as possible.”
Derek added that the staff at Choice Taxis would be getting fully behind the national side during the month long festival of football.
He said: “England flags will be displayed on all of our cars throughout and all our drivers will be getting behind England.”
The World Cup gets underway on June 12 with the final taking place on July 13.
