Fake goods just the tip of a ‘very nasty iceberg’

Herts Police seized more than £20,000 worth of fake merchandise at this year’s Sonisphere festival, held this weekend.

The counterfeit clothing and accessories were confiscated during the event at Knebworth Park in Herts.

The county council’s trading standards department worked with officers to disrupt phoney sellers, but no arrests were made as the culprits co-operated. The items – mainly black t-shirts printed with band artwork– will either be recycled or destroyed.

County cabinet member for community safety Richard Thake said: “Selling fake goods damages legitimate businesses, and the profits are often used to fund more serious organised crime. That cheeky chappie on the market stall is just the tip of a very nasty iceberg.”
