Don’t throw a renewable energy source down the drain – recycle your cooking oil instead

More than a quarter of people surveyed in Hemel Hempstead admit to risking costly drain blockages by pouring their used cooking oil down the sink.

According to a YouGov poll, 54 per cent of householders targeted in Hemel Hempstead mistakenly believe that their water company would foot the bill for a blocked drain – though in reality it would be their responsibility to pick up the tab if it is blocked within the boundary of their house.

Across the UK the average household throws away a teacup of waste cooking oil every month, though renewable energy company Living Fuels is keen to point out it is a valuable resource which could be recycled into clean electricity.

Living Fuels’ managing director Ian Collins oversees 500 waste cooking oil collection tanks across the UK. He said: “Around 80 per cent of the UK population is within a 15-minute drive of a waste cooking oil recycling site – among the best coverage in world.

“The bad news is that the hard core of 27 per cent of adults in Hemel Hempstead are still putting waste cooking oil down the drain, which hasn’t budged since our last poll in 2011.

“The good news is some habits have changed since then. For instance, we’re seeing more waste cooking oil going into the food waste and black bins – neither ideal but better than pouring it down the drain.

“We will not rest until every British householder appreciates their old cooking oil is a precious resource and knows where to recycle it.”

The waste cooking oil goes into combined heat and power which, according to the Department for Energy & Climate Change, is the most carbon-efficient way to extract energy.

Dacorum hosts used cooking oil recycling points at the Hemel Hempstead Household Waste Recycling Centre in Eastman Way, and the Berkhamsted facility in Northbridge Road.
