A man in his 50s was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after his car hit a tree this morning.

At around 7.20am a dark red Ford Fiesta was travelling along Chequers Hill, Flamstead, in the direction of the A5 when it left the road, collided with a tree and overturned.

The driver was taken to Luton and Dunstable Hospital before later being transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge in a serious condition.

No-one else was in the car at the time of the incident.

The road was closed between the junction with the A5 and Singlets Lane before being reopened at around 10.45am.

PC Helen Carpenter, who is investigating the incident, said: “In order to establish exactly what happened I would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision. “Equally, I’d like to speak with anyone who saw the vehicle prior to the incident. “Please contact me if you have any information as this could prove useful to my investigation.”

Anyone with any information should call PC Carpenter on non-emergency number 101, quoting reference ISR 132 of July 3.
