Youngsters read for global campaign

Getting stuck into a good book is always fun but even better if it's for a good cause.

MP David Gauke went back into the classroom to support a global campaign that aims to help children who are missing out on school because of poverty.

This year the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) - the world's largest children's campaign - has asked schools in the UK to join forces and

take part in the Big Read.

The theme is the importance of literacy and how the ability to read and write opens doors for children.

It hopes to put pressure on world leaders to end the education crisis.

Mr Gauke visited youngsters at Swing Gate School in Berkhamsted on Friday (June 16) to talk about the issue.

He said: "It was a good opportunity to talk about the importance of education, what we can be doing in Britain to help the developing world and discuss the role of an MP generally."

Youngsters gave letters to the MP for South West Herts with their ideas of what can be done to tackle the problem.

In a bid to ensure all children receive a free primary education by 2015 the Swing Gate Lane School is one of thousands in the UK currently taking part in the initiative.
