Woman drunk in charge of a horse

A woman who rode her horse to the pub through a busy shopping area had already drunk two small bottles of vodka, a court has heard.

Shoppers were stunned to see Maxine Wiltshire ride a three-shoed horse through Grovehill shops on the afternoon of January 26.

On Friday (February 20) Hemel Hempstead magistrates court heard that Ms Wiltshire was 'clearly intoxicated' and that when a dog walker asked her to steer clear of his pet, she replied: "My horse will eat your dog."

Police officers found her to be 'unsteady on her feet and smelling of alcohol' outside Greenacres pub at Henry Wells Square.

The unemployed 31 year old had spent the day drinking vodka and riding through country lanes, magistrates were told.

John Fuller, defending, said his client had been unable to ride the 14 year old horse, called Poppy, back to its Bedmond stable because it had lost a shoe.

He said: "Ms Wiltshire called a relative to pick them up in a trailer and went to meet some friends for a couple of drinks while she waited.

"This is an unusual case.

"Ms Wiltshire accepts she was under the influence, but she disputes that it was causing any serious problems."

He told the court she had drunk two small bottles of vodka, but was a competent rider whose mother and grandfather had also owned horses.

He said: "She accepts it was probably unwise to take the horse to the square."

Ms Wiltshire, of Hammer Lane, Hemel Hempstead, pleaded guilty to being drunk in charge of a horse in a public place and was fined 50 plus 50 costs.
