Volunteer lock keepers needed to keep waterways moving

A charity is looking for an army of volunteers to become lock keepers on the Grand Union Canal near Tring.

The Canal and River Trust – which cares for 1,654 locks in England and Wales – is looking for potential lock keepers who can commit to one day a week during the summer to look after Marsworth Lock.

Keir Gale was a volunteer at the lock last year. “I’ve had a lifelong interest in boats so it was my way of getting my weekly canal fix,” he said. “Forty years ago my parents hired a canal boat for a holiday which sank at the start of the second week. It didn’t put me off because we got a free week in compensation and I became hooked.

“Although I’ve always been interested in boats, one volunteer had never seen a canal lock. It’s a role that you can take on if you’re highly experienced or have no experience at all.”

Volunteers normally work in pairs, helping boaters along stretches of canal that are busy or difficult to navigate.
