Village celebrates double success

It was a double whammy for villagers who celebrated a successful open day yesterday and being named Hertfordshire's Village of the Year.

Hordes of residents turned up for the annual Open Day to enjoy a dog show, tug of war and open gardens, as well as a host of other fun activities.

Organisers were also delighted on the day to announce Potten End had beaten off stiff competition to be named Hertfordshire's Village of the Year.

Chairman of the Potten End Open Day committee Gavin Brown said: "It was great we were able to announce the win. This year we had a much better turn out and the weather was certainly better than our last Open Day.

We had 96 entries in the dog show and around 100 people for the open air service at the end of the day."

Money raised at the Open Day, which goes into a village fund for various charities and groups, is not yet known, but it is hoped to be more than 5,000.

Potten End, which will now go on to compete in the national finals of the best village competition later this year, was also highly commended in the environment category.

Mike Wallis of Vicarage Road, also won the Peterkin Award, which is presented to an individual making an outstanding contribution to village life.

Competition organiser, Jo Simson, said: "This is only the third time the village has entered the competition in its ten-year history. The last time was in 2005 when it also achieved the Calor Hertfordshire Village of the Year prize and went on to win a regional category prize in the national competition for England."
